BEFORE I could make an impact
in my neighborhood, I needed the
right connections and resources.
I’m Carolyn, from Driving Park.
I have a production company that brings theater opportunities to schools and neighborhood groups. I saw a need for positive activities for children and neighbors in my area, and I decided to do something about it. We perform plays that promote self confidence in teens, and also do community projects to clean up the neighborhood. When youth are part of positive change in their neighborhoods, they take pride in where they live and in themselves.
United Way of Central Ohio’s Neighborhood Training Academy taught me how to find resources and to collaborate. I learned how to become connected to other people who wanted to make a difference. I learned how volunteering my time helps my own well-being and the community. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.
AFTER repairs were made on my house and others nearby, I was proud
of my neighborhood.
I’m Yvonne, from Driving Park.
I’m on disability and have a hard time keeping up with maintenance and repairs for my home. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission was fixing up houses in my neighborhood, and they offered me assistance. They came in and fixed my sidewalk, replaced a door and my unsafe hot water tank, and did a lot of repairs for free!
The best part was that I went to their home maintenance class and learned how to fix window screens and patch drywall. They gave me a fix-it book, a toolbox and tools, so that I won’t have to call someone when I need something repaired. They’re fixing up a lot of homes in the neighborhood, and it is starting to look really nice again. This program has given me more pride in myself, my home and my neighborhood.
