As a final, bonus installment to the National Mentoring Month Series, United Way of Central Ohio would like to feature the Family Mentor opportunity with US Together, Inc.
Organization Description:
US Together, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2003 in response to the growing needs of refugees and immigrants in central Ohio. The organization’s mission is to coordinate, organize, and initiate services to immigrants and refugees through education, advocacy, support services, information, referral, and networking opportunities to strengthen the community in which we live.
Opportunity Description:
Family Mentors will build relationships with newly arrived refugee families. Volunteers will be expected to spend time with the family at least once per week for a minimum of one hour. Time spent with the family can include sharing meals, doing educational activities, practicing English, playing with the children of the family or assisting with homework, or other recreational activities. The role of a family mentor is to help new families acculturate to and navigate American systems while respecting the family’s culture and traditions. Volunteers are encouraged to take families to local attractions and community events.
Volunteers must possess the following characteristics:
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must undergo Background Check
- Must possess excellent communication skills
- Must be knowledgeable about Columbus area
- Must have an interest in learning about and celebrating other cultures and traditions
- Must have a strong respect for other cultures
