Serve our community this September in honor of the anniversary of September 11th . A variety of activities will take place throughout the week leading up to the 10th anniversary t hat honor, remember and celebrate the heroes of 9/11. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Tuesday, September 6: Volunteer Reception Center Training & Drill
4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at YMCA North Branch: 1640 Sandalwood Place, Columbus, OH 43229
During disasters people want to help, so volunteers will come. Volunteer Reception Centers (VRCs) establish a central processing point for placing spontaneous volunteers during a disaster. Learn how to greet, interview, register, train and maintain the records of spontaneous volunteers in an emergency.
Wednesday, September 7: Care Packages for our Troops
5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at HandsOn Central Ohio: 195 N. Grant Ave., Columbus, OH 43215
Volunteer to assemble care packages for our deployed soldiers. HandsOn Central Ohio has adopted a recovery center in Afghanistan that helps injured service members. The recovery center has asked for specific items that we will be putting together to show our gratitude for our soldiers’ service.
Thursday, September 8: Flag Set-Up for National Patriot’s Day
5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at The Ohio Statehouse West Lawn: 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, OH 43215
Set up 2,999 small flags (each one represents a life lost on 9.11.01) in the shape of the two World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. This display will serve as a memory for those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Friday, September 9: National Patriot’s Day Program & Memorial
11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at The Ohio Statehouse West Lawn: 1 Capitol Square, Columbus, OH 43215
Attend this memorial event of the 2,999 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001. The program will be held on the west lawn of the Ohio Statehouse, and 2,999 flags will be displayed in the shape of the two World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon. Join us in remembering those who were lost, and honoring them by embracing September 11th as a National Day of Service.
Saturday, September 10: Hilliard American Legion Poker Run
Event Crew Shifts: 8:00 a.m. – noon, 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., 8:00 - 11:00 p.m.
Photography Shifts: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Hilliard American Legion Post 614: 3898 Lattimer Street, Hilliard, OH 43026
Volunteer at the Motorcycle Poker Run to benefit the American Legion’s Legacy Fund, which provides scholarships to children who have lost a parent in active duty since September 11, 2001. Volunteer to assist with registration, photography, a pancake breakfast, serving dinner, and evening activities. Volunteers will eat for free, get a free T-shirt and get to enjoy an OSU tailgate and live band!
Sunday, September 11: Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore
Volunteer Shifts: Noon – 3:00 p.m., 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Habitat for Humanity-Greater Columbus: 3140 Westerville Road, Columbus, OH 43224
Volunteer at Habitat’s ReStore, a discount home improvement store that accepts and resells new and reusable home improvement building materials. Volunteers are needed to assist customers, stock shelves, organize product displays and help to unload and process donations.
