The Columbus Literacy Council is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to increasing the level of functional literacy of adults reading below an 8th grade level through teaching the English language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The Council's modes of instruction include classes, one-to-one tutoring, small group instruction and computer-assisted instruction. The Council offers classes and tutoring at 19 different sites across Central Ohio, as well as workplace literacy programs focused on teaching English language skills at various local companies.
Volunteer Opportunity
ESOL Tutoring - As an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tutor you can work one-on-one with a student, or with a group of students. You will help a non-English speaking adult overcome the language barrier and adjust to a new life. You need not know the other language; the Council will train you to teach English conversation, reading, and writing.
