Continuing the Conversation: LEAD United Breakfast and Conversation
United Way of Central Ohio continued our Community Conversation the next day, Thursday, October 6, by bringing together 26 emerging leaders in the community for a conversation with Janet Jackson and United Way’s staff who are leading the way in education mobilization.
Janet Jackson opened up the discussion by talking about the connection between business and society, and the importance of businesses being involved in and caring for our community.
"Authority, authenticity, accountability: these are three cornerstones of effective leadership in the 21st century," Janet told the LEAD United participants.
Dr. Nancy Nestor-Baker of The Ohio State University facilitated the conversation that both encouraged the participants to think about their role in ensuring a quality education for all youth in our community and enabled United Way staff to listen to participants’ concerns and ideas for the future.
According to Dr. Nestor-Baker, "These leaders all demonstrated a desire to understand and learn more about what is going on in schools in our community. They know that people don’t understand the challenges that schools face, and that there needs to be stronger connections between the community, parents, businesses and schools."
LEAD United participants were eager to discuss ideas they had for improving education and ways they could be part of building a better community.
"The insights we have gained through these conversations are an important part of building the authenticity we need to lead effectively," said Jackson.
