Labor Relations

The United Way of Central Ohio has been an ongoing partner with Organized Labor; working to insure that Union members and their families have access to the wide range of vital community services. With such a strong partnership, stretching over 50 years, it has created an unprecidented value to our teams efforts, especially during work stoppages and unexpected family emergencies. Our services cover a vast variety of needs which include provisioning food, assisting families in crisis, providing support during layoffs and plant closings, providing food and holiday assistance, and much more. We are confident in our partnership because, just like Organized Labor, it works.

Help for Tough Times

The recent changes in our economy are affecting many people, not only in Central Ohio, but across the country. Many have lost jobs or are living in fear of losing their jobs in the near future. If you have recently found yourself unemployed, this booklet is for you.

History and Principles

The AFL-CIO/United Way Community Service Program
Both the AFL-CIO and United Way believe...

  • We provide an opportunity for all citizens, regardless of race, color, age, sex, national origin, and economic condition, to come together for the common good.
  • We, as a voluntary association of free men and women must pioneer in new directions to meet the changing needs of our changing times.
  • Employees have the right to bargain collectively, without coercion or interference, and that collective bargaining agreement should be respected.
  • Voluntarism is the essence of a democratic society.

The Community Service Program works on your behalf to represent labor on these important public policy issues:

  • Affordable, accessible healthcare
  • Fair and equitable wages
